Updating your COM Computer

Please perform these steps to ensure your computer is receiving updates.

During this process you may continue to use this computer to complete other tasks.

  1. Connect your computer to the Wired or Wireless network  
  2. Log onto this computer with your NetID and leave this computer powered up and connected to the network for at least 2 hours
  3. Press the Start button, then click Settings (the cogwheel icon) just above it
  4. Select Update & Security near the bottom 
  5. Press the Check for updates button
  6. Your computer will automatically receive the necessary Microsoft Security Patches
    • In approximately 2-3 hours, please reboot your computer to install the necessary patches
  7. After rebooting, log into your computer again using your NetID and leave this computer connected to the network for the next 4 - 6 hours

  1. Connect your computer to a Wired or Wireless network
  2. Log onto this computer with your NetID and leave this computer powered up and connected to the network for at least 2 hours
  3. Establish a VPN connection and connect to the COM network
  4. Press the Start button, then click Settings (the cogwheel icon) just above it
  5. Select Update & Security near the bottom 
  6. Press the Check for updates button
  7. Keep your computer connected to the work so that your computer can automatically receive necessary Microsoft Security Patches
    • In approximately 2-3 hours, please reboot your computer to install the necessary patches
  8. After rebooting, log into your computer again using your NetID and leave this computer connected to the network for the next 4 - 6 hours

As time permits, completing these steps can help ensure that your computer receives necessary updates in the future

  1. Connect your computer to a Wired or Wireless network
    • If you are working remotely, establish a VPN connection and connect to the COM network
  2. On your keyboard, press [Windows Key] + [r]. This should produce a small "Run" box near the bottom-left of your screen if performed correctly.
    Alternatively, you may press "Start", type the word "run", and press Enter
  3. Next to "Open:" type: control smscfgrc and press Enter. This should produce the "Configuration Manager Properties" window.
  4. Select the "Actions" Tab
  5. For each item listed, select the item and press the "Run Now" bottom near the bottom-right of the window.
  6. Press "OK" to the pop-up message that follows, informing you that each cycle may take several minutes to finish.
    Note: You do not need to wait between before running the next item
